Former Athletes Help HBCU Students Learn About Personal Finance

An often overlooked topic that students don’t learn much about in school is finance. Understanding finance is vital to ensuring that advantageous decisions are made when it comes to managing money. In addition, financial literacy exposes students to career opportunities in the finance industry that can diversify the workforce. To fill this gap, a group of former athletes and several companies are collaborating to provide HBCU students education about personal finance.

The virtual series, titled “ELEVATE! Creating and Preserving Black Wealth,” aims to teach students about ways to build generational wealth, as well as the different opportunities available in the finance industry. Hosted by former NFL player Adewale Ogunleye, former NBA player Allan Houston, and SIAC Commissioner Greg Moore, the series is a partnership between UBS,  a global finance firm, and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).

Through this program HBCU students will learn smart money managing habits and develop skills that will be beneficial to them once they graduate.

One of the hosts, Ogunleye, had to learn how to manage the large sums of money he earned while playing for the NFL. His ability to manage his money led him to a career in finance. These days, he is the head of sports and entertainment at UBS, according to YR

Moore decided to participate in the financial series in order to address income inequality and the affects it has on generations to come.

As reported by YR, Moore made the following statement on the issue:

“Some of our HBCUs are located in some of the most economically underserved, disconnected communities in the country.”

“When you can share these stories and let the students know and can give them the right information, access, and opportunity, they can really create a lot more than we can imagine,” said Houston.
