ChristianaCare, Delaware’s largest healthcare system, recently announced that they will be investing $500,000 into an HBCU scholarship program. The healthcare company wants to help students in underserved communities who will need substantial financial aid to attend college.

Bettina Tweardy Riveros, the Chief Health Equity Officer and Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and Community Engagement for ChristianaCare made the following statement on the scholarship program (via WDEL):

“Today, ChristianaCare has announced the Future of Health Scholarship program. The HBCU scholarship program that we’ve launched is really focused on building a strong pipeline of healthcare clinicians and other leaders, frankly, from the communities we serve. We’re really focused on supporting those individuals we serve—historically disinvested communities—and supporting them with scholarships to historically black colleges and universities to really drive interest in pursuing careers in healthcare.”

The Future of Health Scholarship program will create a fund totaling $500,000 to ten students planning to attend an HBCU. The amount of $12,500 will be given to each awardee for each of the four years they’re in college. In addition to the scholarship, students will also be offered paid internships with ChristianaCare, which the HBCU Week Foundation will help to facilitate.

Applicants for the Future Scholarship Program must meet the following criteria:

  • Have proof of citizenship or legal residency in the United States

  • Be a resident of Delaware

  • Graduated high school with a minimum GPA of 3.0

  • Must be an incoming freshman student entering college

  • Has a commitment to attend an HBCU for the duration of their college education

  • Need to demonstrate a strong financial need

The deadline to apply for the scholarship program is March 1, 2022, with winners being announced by May 1. You can find the application on HBCU Foundation Week’s website here.
