36 HBCU Students Selected for a North Carolina Internship Program
For college students, an internship is a gateway to more opportunities once they graduate. In addition, internships provide students with the experience, knowledge, and skills that can boost their resumes as they begin the job hunt. Several students from nine of North Carolina’s HBCUs were recently selected to participate in a paid summer internship program.
In June 2022, 36 students from North Carolina’s HBCUs received the news that they’ll be participating in an immersive summer internship program. The North Carolina Governer’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Internship Program connects students to Fortune 500 companies in the state. In addition, the program aims to make interns more competitive in the job market for top positions after graduation.
The nine North Carolina HBCUs participating in this summer’s program include:
Bennett College
Elizabeth City State University
Fayetteville State University
Livingstone College
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University
North Carolina Central University
Saint Augustine’s University
Shaw University
Winston-Salem University
The University of North Carolina System said the following in a press release regarding the announcement:
“During their participation, students will gain valuable work experience and increase their competitiveness in the job market. The state’s businesses will also benefit by accessing an untapped, diverse talent pool. Studies show that seven in 10 internships result in full-time work.”
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Lenovo, Lowe’s Home Improvement, and State Farm are some companies taking part in the 2022 program this summer.
All students selected for the most recent cohort met the eligibility criteria. Candidates interested in the full-time paid internship program must be rising juniors and seniors at North Carolina’s HBCUs with a minimum 2.8 GPA, active members of student clubs and national organizations, and have strong communication skills. The program is open to students from all disciplines (The University of North Carolina System).
