Tiffany Waddell Tate

Back in November 2023, we were lucky to have career and talent coach, Tiffany Waddell Tate, join us for another workshop about landing high paying roles.

In the workshop, Tiffany shared strategies for creating resumes that are geared toward six figure positions, particularly roles that don’t require advanced degrees or specialized training (i.e. physicians or scientists).

Read on for some of our top workshop takeaways!

Know Your Audience

Tate explained that HR managers are "hiring for someone who can do the job that they're hiring for today, but they're also seeking talent that has the potential for growth within their company.” It’s important to remember that managers are looking at your resume for 6-10 seconds or are likely using an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to help them filter applications. Job seekers should optimize their resumes for ATS by choosing relevant keywords from the job description. Also, be sure to look at multiple job descriptions for similar roles to confirm that you are choosing the necessary keywords that will help you optimize your resume.

Explain Your Impact

You must get really good at communicating your value and how the work you have done has made an impact in your organization. Thus you need to ensure:

 1) The language you’re using on your resume aligns with the job of interest. Be sure to pull key words from the job description and speak the language the the recruiter will understand in reference to the role.

 3) You showcase the value you added to the organization (i.e. quantify your success via accomplishments and value-related keywords). Ask yourself, What were the specific things that you did to generate revenue, save money, scale programs or change the way a team works?

Focus on These Key Resume Sections

Follow best-practices for utilizing space on your resume to convey your impact story.

  • Executive statement: This is a succinct career narrative that discusses your value but also shows how you can transfer your skills to a new role or industry. Executive summaries provide a high level summary of your career story that includes skills and experience that helped you add value to the company.

  • Education, traditional and nontraditional: For example, if you have a project management professional (PMP) certification, be sure to include it. If you lack a PMP certification, include your self-directed learning that displays project management skills like processes to help the team meet deadlines or programs that help you optimize the budget.

  • Technology zone: Show a deep knowledge of technology platforms. For example, list the specific CRM-Client Relationship Management systems you have used as this will show that you can upskill quickly to a similar CRM platform.

The sum of each part of your resume will lead to the comprehensive impact story and will be essential to communicating your impact for a six-figure role.
