The gaming industry is an ever-growing field with an abundance of opportunities for those who have a passion for video games. From software developers to audio engineers, the career possibilities in this industry are endless. As a way to encourage more young Black students, especially Black women, to consider a career in the gaming industry, the Black Collegiate Gaming Association (BCGA) has created a new program for high school students.

The purpose of BCGA is to “pivot Black and women of color college students into the overall gaming industry, not only as consumers but as contributors.” The association introduces college students to the gaming industry and esports, promotes the latest job opportunities in the field, shares team building and leadership skills, and also hosts several events and workshops.

The Corners to Colleges Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) program began hosting its inaugural cohort earlier this month. The program exposes the selected high school students to HBCU gaming programs by pairing them with e-sports college advisors and having them develop case studies and other activities.

Several HBCUs across the nation are housing the participants on their campuses for the week-long program, which include Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Edward Waters University, Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, and Mississippi Valley State University

BCGA’s founder and chairwoman, Keshia Walker, said the following about the new program (via Post News Group).

“First and foremost, the purpose of the Corners to Colleges program is to let high school students know that the gaming industry is more than just playing the video games at home,” said founder and chairwoman of BCGA Keshia Walker. “Secondly, [they receive] exposure to HBCU life and what it’s like to stay at an HBCU. Third, [they’re introduced] to all things related to gaming and technology.”

The inaugural program will conclude later this year, with BCGA continuing its initiative with an upcoming gaming and sports academy in the fall. The academy will help attendees learn how to get into the gaming and esports industries.
