Morgan State Becomes the First 4-Year College to Join Amazon’s Pre-Paid Tuition Program

As most know, paying college tuition is a pain. While some are lucky to receive full-ride or partial scholarships, and grants, many students take out federal and private student loans to cover the costs of classes, books and living expenses. In addition to student loans, some students may work full-time or part-time jobs to cover their housing, food, gas, and other necessities.

To help prospective students at Morgan State University pay for college tuition, Amazon recently added the university to its pre-paid tuition program.

Morgan State joins two other Maryland universities working with Amazon, though it is the only HBCU in the state involved in the program as of August 2022.

Amazon’s Career Choice Program “offers help with paying for college tuition or industry certifications, as well as helping employees who need assistance such as English proficiency, getting their high school diploma or GED” (WMAR 2 News).

The HBCU will offer Amazon employees up to 60 transferable credit hours to eight bachelor’s degree programs, such as Educational Studies, Interdisciplinary Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Technology Services, virtual learning opportunities, and support from academic advisors.

“Morgan is proud to be an Amazon educational partner, and we look forward to playing a role in the educational journey of their employees,” said Morgan State’s president, David K. Wilson. “Whether we are talking about an adult learner at the beginning of the process toward earning a college degree or looking to leverage the college credits they already have to get over the finish line, we’re committed to working with them to where they want to be. It is our hope that partnerships like this, between corporations and institutes of higher education, can serve as a blueprint for how we can transform the way we meet the expanding needs of the nontraditional adult student,” Wilson added (Black Enterprise).

“We’re looking forward to Morgan State University coming on board as an education partner for Career Choice, adding to the hundreds of best-in-class offerings available to our employees,” said Tammy Thieman, the global program lead of Amazon’s Career Choice program (Black Enterprise)
