Improve Time Management with Time Blocking, Energy Matching and Exercise

We’re often working around the clock to stay on top of emails, multiple projects, stress management, conversations with colleagues, or posting on social media about a side hustle. As such, it can be very hard to managing our time effectively. Consider these strategies to manage your time like a pro.

Embrace Protected Time Blocks

Because distractions are inevitable, it’s best to forge against them systematically. Create time blocks that are dedicated to big goals and objectives. Schedule these blocks and know that this means you may have to close computer tabs, remove your phone from sight, say no, or put a sign on your door in order to eliminate distractions. You can set a visible timer to help you know exactly when the time block is over. You can also use the Pomodoro technique for shorter bursts of time. Both strategies are mentioned in 11 Leaders Weigh in on their Top Time Management Techniques.

Energy Match Your Tasks

Your most complex tasks will require higher levels of physical and mental energy. Thus, create your schedule so that the tasks at hand and your energy levels are aligned. If you tackle complex these tasks when your energy levels are low, it will actually take longer to complete the tasks, making you less efficient and ineffective. When you're struggling with energy, take some time to recharge at work during your break. Whether it’s fueling up at lunch or getting some exercise into your day, it’s important to manage your energy so that you can focus on your work.

Exercise

In 3 Reasons Why Exercising Will Boost Your Time Management Skills, Banerjea and Marshall explain that the benefits of exercise reach far beyond your physique. Exercise relieves tension and stress, increases energy levels and makes us more disciplined. If you're in the middle of a stressful project, taking a break to exercise for 5-15 minutes can be beneficial, allowing you to release endorphins which increase your happiness quotient and stress tolerance. This directly relates to better time management, because when you think more clearly, you will be more focused on the task at hand instead of focusing on the build up of stress and other distractions.
