HBCUs in Atlanta
Atlanta is the largest city in Georgia, with 498,715 citizens in 2020 (U.S. Census Bureau). Many young Black professionals and creators have flooded the booming city to pursue jobs and other great opportunities. 52.37% of Atlantians identify as Black or African American, so it’s no surprise that there are several HBCUs housed within the city (AreaVibes). Here’s a list of HBCUs offering top-notch education in Atlanta.
Clark Atlanta University
Clark Atlanta University (CAU) is a Private Methodist college located in the heart of Atlanta. Recognized as one of the “Best Southeastern Universities” by the Princeton Review, CAU is committed to “delivering education that is accessible, relevant, and transformative.” CAU offers several programs such as: Business Administration, Education, Arts and Sciences and Social Work.
Interdenominational Theological Center
The Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) was founded in 1958 as a group of four seminaries that support theological education. The school is fully accredited by The Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS). Students can pursue master and doctorate degrees in Divinity, Liturgical Arts and Cultures, Religion and Education and Ministry.
Morehouse College
Over 150 years ago, Morehouse established itself as a men’s private college. As a liberal arts institution, Morehouse aims to create a brotherhood among faculty, staff, and students both on and off-campus. There are 33 liberal arts-related majors and minors students to choose from.
Morehouse School of Medicine
For students wanting both an HBCU and medical school-infused experience, Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) is the best fit. MSM is a co-ed university offering graduate degrees in medicine, public health, neuroscience, etc. As one of the only four black medical schools in America, the school’s mission statement is to “increase the diversity of the health professional and scientific workforce.”
Morris Brown College
Morris Brown College is a Private Methodist HBCU offering liberal arts degree. With their financial aid recently restored, Morris Brown is eager to welcome new students to their college. Spelman College
The “sister” of Morehouse, Spelman, is a private women’s college. Spelman is the oldest institution providing higher education for Black or African American women. The programs offered at Spelman include African Diaspora and World, Asian Studies, Curatorial Studies, Food Studies and more.
