Bennett and Spelman Colleges are the only two HBCUs for women; thus they are at the helm of our list of Women's Studies programs at HBCUs.
Bennett College - Greensboro, NC

Bennett College (founded 1873) began in the basement of Warnersville Methodist Episcopal Church with 70 students. In its first iteration, it served as a teacher training institution for the formerly enslaved. These days, Bennett offers students an opportunity to minor in Africana Women's Studies; the track includes "an emphasis given to understanding the experiences, social-cultural conditions and histories of women in the African Diaspora."
Spelman College - Atlanta, GA

Spelman (founded 1881) started as Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary; in 1924 the institution became Spelman College. Spelman has a Comparative Women's Studies program that offers a major and minor. This program also offers students an opportunity to learn filmmaking through their Digital Moving Image Salon.
Clark Atlanta University - Atlanta, GA

Clark Atlanta University (founded 1865) was a consolidation of Atlanta University and Clark College. Their Africana Women's Studies Program offers a major, minor and a doctoral degree. This Historically Black University's program demands that scholars compare and analyze how women of the African diaspora strategize and contribute to their communities.
Howard University - Washington DC

Howard University (founded 1867) was created by Civil War hero General Oliver O. Howard, and stretches across 256 acres. Howard's Minor in Women's, Gender, and Sexualities Studies (WGSS) “brings feminist and queer theory in conversation with research in the humanities, social sciences, liberal arts, and natural sciences.” This HBCUs' Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership, the first of its kind, focuses on empowering Black women in leadership positions.
North Carolina Central University - Durham, N.C.

North Carolina Central University (founded 1910) was created by Dr. James E. Shepard as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race, Inc. NCCU offers an interdisciplinary Minor in Women’s and Gender Studies that allows students to study the intersectional factors that impact women globally. The program covers a range of areas including Women of the African Diaspora in Literature, Health, History, Media and Political Science.
