Discover the Field of Science Policy at The Historically Black College and University Science Policy Tour

The Historically Black College and University Science Policy Tour (HBCU SPCT) was created in August 2020 by HBCU alumni Jasmine George, Ph.D. (Morehouse School of Medicine) and Raechel McKinley, Ph.D. (Howard University) in collaboration with the National Science Policy Network (NSPN) with the goal of not only introducing students to the field of science policy, but also diversifying minority representation in the entire STEM field.

The HBCU & MSI SciPol College Tour serves as an introduction to the intersecting fields of science and policy, exposing students to science policy and science communication, and equipping them with the tools necessary to effectively navigate in those spaces (i.e., legislative fields, government agencies, nonprofits, and the private sector). HBCU SPCT hopes that by combining STEM expertise with policy, they will be able to share resources, make informed decisions, and change our communities.

Overall, HBCU SPCT aims to build positive relationships between HBCUs and organizations in the science-policy space, to then create opportunities for students and staff alike to engage and flourish once in those spaces.

Below is an outline of programming that will take place during HBCU SPCT from March 28th-March 30th.

Day 1: March 28, 2023

The first day will include a brief welcome and introduction to the event, along with two presentations and a breakout room activity. Together these events will provide context and help attendees delve into the rich field of science & technology policy.

Day 2: March 29, 2023

The second day will focus on career development and everything from fellowship opportunities to lived experience, research, and advocacy at the local and state level, as well as other professional development skills and support.

Day 3: March 30, 2023
