Best HBCU Psychology Programs

Graduates of a psychology program can pursue further education or start their careers in entry-level positions in research, counseling, or academic professions. Potential professions for psychology majors include psychologists, human resources managers, counselors, case managers, and admissions counselors.

If you’re considering applying to a psychology degree program, here are three HBCUs providing high-quality curriculums for this specialty. 

Howard University 

According to U.S. News, Howard University ranks number 68 among the best psychology schools in America. The school’s psychology department is “committed to providing an educational experience of exceptional quality to students from internationally diverse backgrounds.” Prospective students can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Psychology or a Ph.D. program in one of the following specialties: clinical, developmental, neuropsychology, personality, and social psychology. 

Hampton University

At Hampton University, prospective students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. The 120-credit-hour program includes courses like Intro to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Theories of Personality. In addition, for those interested in applying for medical school, the program offers a Premedical concentration, which includes prerequisite courses that replace the medical school’s degree electives. 

Tennessee State University

Tennessee State University offers undergraduate and graduate programs in psychology, with some offered fully online or in a hybrid (in-person and online) format. The school’s Department of Psychological Sciences and Counseling “aims to meet students where they are today and take them to where they want to be by providing all students with the best possible mentorship, training, and education in the field of psychology.” The university offers the following degrees in psychology: a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Master of Science in Counseling (Clinical Mental Health Concentration), Master of Science in Professional School Counseling Program, and a Ph.D. in Psychology - Counseling Psychology Program.
