For almost two hundred years, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), have been providing higher education for Americans. These schools have formed the core of the college experience for Black Americans since 1837 when Cheyney University of Pennsylvania was founded as the African Institute.
HBCU alumni build successful lives in many career paths. Furthermore, HBCU graduates have contributed in every occupational area across America’s diverse workforce. These graduates work for others, are professionals or founded successful businesses.
Alumni Life: Supporting Your HBCU’s Career Center
There are many ways to give back to an alma mater. But an increasing number of HBCU graduates are offering help to their campus career centers.
HBCU alumni (both former students and former employees) are generous donors to these institutions. The number of HBCU alumni that are helping the career centers on their former campuses is increasing. Therefore, many alumni are giving back in the following ways.
Encouraging their employers to recruit for internships and jobs
Offering internships in their own companies
Volunteering on employment panels or career center advisory boards
Mentoring students and fellow alumni who want to enter their professions
Serving as advisors for campus clubs, organizations or civic projects
Donating funds to support scholarship programs for current students
