Globally, specific industries are always in high demand for new talent to fulfill different positions. In 2021, the top five industries that were in high demand included healthcare, information technology & engineering, counseling and therapy, financial management, and digital marketing. As technology evolves and the effects of COVID-19 linger, these industries require a constant stream of talent to fulfill these needs. The following positions are considered the most sought-after for the above-mentioned industries this year.

Software Developer (Average base salary: $73,441/yr)

Software developers design, write, debug, and modify software programs for computers and mobile devices. Software developers often team up with computer programmers to work in roles related to computer systems, manufacturing, finance, healthcare industries, or they become a freelancer (ComputerScience.org). Expertise in Python, ASP.NET, JavaScript, Java, and C#, plus a bachelor’s or master’s degree in software development, web development, or a related degree are required for this career field.

Data Scientist (Average base salary: $97,254/yr)

Data scientists create unique data models, processes, and algorithms to help a company meet its organizational goals and needs. In addition, they also analyze large datasets to identify trends so that a company can adjust its strategic plan as needed (Northeastern University). Data scientists are skilled in machine learning, programming, computer science, statistical analysis, and other related skills. A master’s degree in data science  or a related degree is preferred by most employers.

Artificial Intelligence Specialist (Average base salary: $126,538/yr)

Artificial intelligence is a new field with many unknown territories that have yet to be uncovered. With this in mind, there are a lot of opportunities for recent graduates in this industry. An artificial intelligence specialist is a professional with expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and how to build and operate them (Dynamic Business). They can specialize in different types of AI, such as machine learning, robotics, natural language processing, and others. A STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degree, preferably in math, is recommended for a career in AI.

Full Stack Engineer (Average base salary: $93,598/yr)

Full-stack engineers are software engineers who work on each software development stage from beginning to end (Coursera). “Full-stack” implies that a software engineer has a high level of expertise that allows them to work on both the front (easy-medium level of knowledge) and back end (intermediate-expert level of knowledge) of software programming. Full-stack engineers' duties can involve coding, troubleshooting, fixing bugs, and other responsibilities. Their daily tasks may require the use of HTML5, CSS, C++, Java, Python, and additional software tools. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in full-stack engineering, information systems, or computer science is recommended for this career.

Nurse Practitioner (Average base salary: $114,708/yr)

A nurse practitioner provides healthcare services such as clinical diagnoses, patient education, and treatment of health conditions. These nurses may specialize in certain practices, such as pediatrics, obstetrics, or family medicine. They have their private practice, provide in-home care, or work in a healthcare facility. Nurse practitioners are a step above registered nurses, as they must obtain a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and additional clinical training. In addition, nurse practitioners must pass a national certification exam, Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Board Certification Exam, to become licensed to practice.

Information Security Analyst (Average base salary: $103,590/yr)

Viruses and malware are common threats to individuals and businesses that regularly use technology daily. To address this issue, many companies hire an information security analyst to eliminate or reduce the risk of compromised private information. Information security analysts design and facilitate security measures to protect a company’s data (U.S. Bureau Labor of Statistics). A bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related degree is preferred for a career in information security analysis.

Robotics Engineer (Average base salary: $89,821/yr)

For those who enjoy building and constructing human-like machinery, a career in robotics engineering may be a good fit. Robotics engineers are responsible for drafting and creating machines that imitate human behavior. These engineers can work in mining, automotive, healthcare, and manufacturing industries. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field, plus strong analytical, problem-solving, and programming skills, is recommended for a career in robotics engineering (SHRM).

Project Manager (Average base salary: $76,938/yr)

Project managers are an essential part of a company’s team. They’re responsible for leading teams, managing budgets, developing practical goals, communicating with stakeholders, and many other tasks. With the range of responsibilities, no day is the same for project managers. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field plus a certification in Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) are recommended for those interested in pursuing a career in project management (Coursera).
