“My parents had mutual friends who had been trying to set them up. My mom never went to breakfast on campus but decided to go one morning, and when she and my dad crossed paths, there were fireworks.”

That's what Denitra shared with BlackLove.com on behalf of her parents, Anita and Demetrius. They first met at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Their story, along with many other stories about HBCU Love like theirs, is highlighted in a new show called Black Love Stories: HBCU Edition.

The show features “Our Love. Our Schools. Our Culture.” And it’s out now!

Denitra said that her parents dated for about six months, and then my Dad proposed:

“The summer after my mom graduated, they married, but my Dad had a year of school left, so they lived in the married student dorms.”

“They had nothing and slept on the floor for a while before saving enough for a bed. Thirty-one years later, they have three children — two biological and one adopted — and two grandchildren,” she said.

According to their daughter, Anita and Demetrius have successful careers in engineering and education.

They also have owned several businesses and created generational wealth for their family.

“They are such a beautiful example of love and display that through their journey and counseling young dating and married couples,” said Denitra.

Make sure you all watch Anita and Demetrius and their HBCU Love story alongside others like Codie and Shone of Howard University, Tia and Yasmine of Spelman College, Leticia and Joe of Tuskegee University, and more.
