HBCUs in South Carolina

Eight of the nation’s HBCUs reside in South Carolina. These institutions have made a tremendous impact on the state’s economy. According to UNCF, South Carolina’s HBCUs produce 4,985 jobs and $5.2 billion in lifetime earnings. Take a look at the following list of South Carolina HBCUs and what they offer. 

Allen University - Columbia, SC

Allen University is a private HBCU serving an average of roughly 600 students each year. As a Christian liberal arts institution, the school’s core values include integrity, accountability, respect, excellence, and faith. The institution offers many undergraduate and graduate programs under its four divisions plus their Dickerson-Green Theological Seminary. 

Benedict College - Columbia, SC

Benedict College is a Baptist-affiliated private HBCU. Founded by abolitionist Bathsheba A. Benedict, the institution has over 1,700 students enrolled in its 28 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. In addition, Benedict offers programs such as Cybersecurity, Mass Communication, and many others for students interested in STEM careers. 

Claflin University - Orangeburg, SC

Claflin University is a private, co-ed institution initially founded in 1869. Ranked as one of the Top 10 Best HBCUs by U.S. News, the institution provides an intimate classroom environment with a student-faculty ratio of 14:1. Claflin has several schools and departments offering degree programs in liberal arts-related specialties. 

Clinton College - Rock Hill, SC

Clinton College is a Christian college accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools. Clinton’s mission is to “create a holistic environment that cultivates an inclusive community of students, faculty, staff, and administrators who are prepared to excel in academic achievement.” The institution offers several undergraduate degrees such as Liberal Arts, Black Sacred Music & Worship, Accounting, etc. 

Denmark Technical College - Denmark, SC

Denmark Technical College is a two-year technical college established in 1947. Located in rural Bamberg County, the college has around 500 students enrolled each year. Denmark Technical offers many programs within their divisions of Arts and Sciences; Industrial and Related Technologies; Business, Computers, & Related Technologies; and Nursing. 

Morris College - Sumter, SC

Morris College is a private, Baptist-affiliated college providing liberal arts degree programs. Morris’s mission is to “produce graduates who can pursue useful and productive careers and in so doing enhance their own lives and the society in which they take their own places.” Within the institution’s five divisions, prospective students can pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Fine Arts, Science, or Science in Education. 

South Carolina (SC) State University - Orangeburg, SC

Established in 1896, SC State University is one of the largest HBCUs in South Carolina. With over 2,900 students enrolled each year and 30,000+ active alumni, the institution “prepares highly skilled, competent and socially aware graduates to enable them to work and live productively in a dynamic, global society” (SC State). Currently, SC State is the only HBCU in the state offering a Bachelor of Science program in nuclear engineering. 

Voorhees University - Denmark, SC

Voorhees University is a 4-year private HBCU founded in 1897. With their long-term affiliation with the Episcopal Church, Voorhees “focuses on developing students as well as intellectually.”The liberal arts college offers 12 undergraduate and graduate degree programs for prospective students to choose from.
