A Coding Camp for Women at HBCUs

Esteemed actress, author, and entrepreneur Malinda Williams is launching The E.S.T.E.A.M. Project, a coding bootcamp for women at HBCUs. Black women are underrepresented in the technology sector; thus, this early support and experience is necessary to increase Black women’s growth and success in tech.

To participate in the four week program, applicants must be women, at least a rising sophomore and in good standing at an HBCU. Students must have an interest in coding and creative problem solving regardless of their major.

The in-person kick-off weekend is May 31-June 2, 2024 on Jackson State University’s campus and the remainder of the course will occur virtually. Upon showcasing their final projects through a presentation, students will receive a $1,000 scholarship and additional gifts.

“Coding is a powerful tool - it is the language of the future. One that I have been learning for the past 12 years and that has empowered me by unlocking doors that I never knew could be available to me. I believe the E.S.T.E.A.M. Project HBCU Coding Bootcamp will offer a way for young women to acquire valuable skills to sustain success in the 21st century,” Malinda Williams explained

This program will help students develop coding and technical skills. According to the press release, as part of its Community Education Initiative, Apple will be providing the hardware, scholarships and professional learning assistance. The program is designed to support the students  by providing mentorship and networking opportunities. Additionally, the program will offer a  creative space for the women to collaborate on projects that pour back into students’ communities.
The E.S.T.E.A.M. Project is under the umbrella of the Arise and Shine Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose goal is to empower women to reach their goals. The foundation was founded and led by Williams and her sisters Leslie Williams-Dunn and Lisa Sorenson. Williams-Dunn is a retired senior director of supply chain technology at Johnson & Johnson. Sorenson is a communications specialist and wellness advocate as well as the President & CEO of Lisa Sorensen Public Relations.
