Students must Debunk the Holiday Job Search Myth

Too many people, especially college students believe in the myth that companies do not make significant hiring decisions during the holidays. If you are one of the students who believes that, here is a job search tip – Debunk that job search myth right now!

Instead of slowing down your job search, you should be taking it up another notch.

Although the economy is bad, companies are still hiring and many want to make those decisions before the end of this year. In a tight economy, the Class of 2009 can expect some heavy competition in the job market. This holiday season is not the time to slack off on the job search.

Stay focused and continue to submit resumes for interviews or for entry level career programs with preferred employers. If they are not coming to your campus, meet them at a job fair, in a virtual job fair or visit their website.

– Create a professional profile on social networking sites. Watch your language and make sure you are creating a positive online persona.
– Network with family and friends you will see over the upcoming holidays. Share your career goals and plans if you are graduating December or next spring and do not be shy about asking for job leads.
– Plan to visit your HBCU career center this fall. Chances are you can get your resume critiqued and get some career coaching from someone even in your intended career field.
– Get your business professional or business casual attire ready for on campus recruiting events.
If you are graduating in the spring or looking for a summer internship – do not slow down your job search this holiday.
